Be Kind to Yourself: You Don’t Always Have to Push So Hard

09 April 2025 /

We live in a world that celebrates productivity, achievement, and always doing more.  For many of my clients, this constant striving becomes exhausting–not just because life is busy, but because of the internal pressure to keep going, keep performing, keep proving their worth.

As an EMDR and , I often see how deeply this mindset is rooted in old patterns—whether from trauma, early life experiences, or simply growing up in a culture that equates busyness with value. The nervous system gets stuck in ‘doing’ mode, where rest feels unsafe and being kind to yourself feels like slacking off.

But what if you didn’t have to keep pushing?

What if gentleness wasn’t weakness, but wisdom?

Kindness Isn’t Giving Up

Being kind to yourself isn’t about letting yourself off the hook. It’s not about complacency or laziness. It’s about shifting away from self-criticism and towards self-compassion. It’s giving yourself permission to rest, to breathe, to just be—without feeling guilty about it.

True change doesn’t always come from trying harder. It often comes from feeling safe enough to let go. This is where EMDR and CBT can be so helpful—gently uncovering the beliefs that whisper things like “I’m only worthy if I’m achieving,” or “If I stop, I’ll fall apart.”

Signs You Might Be Pushing Too Hard

• You feel anxious when you’re not being productive

• Rest makes you feel guilty or uncomfortable

• You measure your worth by what you do, not who you are

• Your inner voice is rarely kind or encouraging

If this resonates, it’s not a personal failing. It’s likely a learned survival strategy that’s no longer serving you—and you don’t have to keep carrying it.

A Gentle Practice: Try This Today

Take a moment now. Place a hand on your heart and take a slow breath.

Then ask yourself: “What would kindness look like for me today?”

Maybe it’s cancelling a plan you don’t have energy for.

Maybe it’s speaking to yourself the way you would speak to a loved one.

Maybe it’s simply reminding yourself that you’re enough, exactly as you are.

Let it be small. Let it be real. Let it be enough.

You Deserve Your Own Kindness

Therapy isn’t just about coping—it’s about healing. And healing begins not with pushing harder, but with softening, slowing down, and giving yourself the compassion you’ve always deserved.

If you’re ready to stop striving and start healing, I’m here. You don’t have to do this alone.

Be Kind to Yourself.
